What is Form Analysis?

Form analysis means looking at how a team has played recently to judge what it is likely to do next. The most common version is "the last five": a string such as W-W-D-L-W, or the points collected from those games.

Everyone looks at form. The real question is how much it actually tells you. In this guide we measured it with real matches from the ScoreLab database instead of relying on rules of thumb.

What Our Data Says: How Well Does Form Predict the Next Match?

Data: 79 league-seasons from 45 leagues, 21,164 league matches (cups and friendlies excluded). For every team in every match we took its previous five league games and compared them with the result of the next game: 36,562 team-match observations in total. Coverage depends on the seasons in our database: Premier League, Süper Lig and Russia 2022/23–2025/26; La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 2024/25–2025/26; Brazil 2023–2026 and MLS 2024–2026 (calendar-year seasons); the Championship 2025/26 only.

1. Points from the last five → the next match

Points in last 5 Home team wins Away team wins
0–3 34.4% 20.8%
4–6 40.8% 27.7%
7–9 45.4% 30.7%
10–12 52.8% 37.4%
13–15 61.9% 48.4%

Across all observations the win rate is 37.3%. A home side in excellent form (13–15 points) is well above that; an away side in poor form (0–3 points) fails to win four games out of five.

How to read it: the effect is real but limited. Even a 13–15-point home side does not win around 38% of the time. Form on its own is never a sure thing.

2. Recent form or season average?

We compared how well three measures separate wins from non-wins (AUC: 0.5 = coin flip, 1.0 = perfect). So that the season average is meaningful, this section only uses teams with at least 10 matches that season: 30,874 observations.

Measure Predictive power (AUC)
Points in last 5 0.573
xG difference in last 5 0.590
Season points per game 0.609

This is the key finding: a team's season-long points per game predicts the next result better than its last five matches. Five games is a small sample in which luck, injuries and fixture difficulty all leak into the result. And if you do look at the last five, xG difference tells you more than points.

3. "Lucky form" does not last

We split teams with 10 or more points from their last five by their average per-match xG difference over the same five games: ahead (above +0.3), neutral (0 to +0.3) and behind (below 0).

Situation Next-match win Next-match loss
Good form + ahead on xG (> +0.3) 54.7% 22.7%
Good form + neutral xG 43.0% 31.7%
Good form but behind on xG (lucky) 35.5% 37.5%

Two groups with equally strong last-five points differ by 19 percentage points in their next-match win rate. Teams that keep winning while conceding the better chances fall below even the overall average (37.3%). Judging a team "in form" without checking its xG is therefore misleading.

4. Form effect by league

Difference in next-match win rate between teams with 10+ points and teams with 6 or fewer points from their last five (the 10 leagues with the most matches out of the 45 in our database; difference in percentage points):

League Good form (10+) Poor form (≤6) Difference
Bundesliga 54.1% 32.8% +21.3
Süper Lig 52.5% 32.9% +19.6
Russian Premier League 48.1% 29.9% +18.2
Ligue 1 51.6% 34.2% +17.4
Premier League 49.9% 32.7% +17.2
La Liga 48.3% 35.1% +13.2
MLS 43.5% 32.0% +11.5
Serie A 44.4% 33.0% +11.4
Championship 42.1% 35.2% +6.9
Brasileirão 38.3% 34.4% +3.9

Among these 10 leagues the form effect is clear in the Bundesliga, Süper Lig, Russia, Ligue 1 and Premier League, and markedly weaker in the Championship and Brazil. With only 1–4 seasons per league, the order within the top group is not certain; the real split is between that group and the Championship/Brazil. Giving "last five" the same weight everywhere is therefore misleading.

How to Analyze Form, Step by Step

Based on the data, read a team's form in this order before a match:

  1. Start with the season average. Points per game across the season is a more reliable baseline than the last five.
  2. Read the last five through xG difference, not points. Chance quality shows whether results were deserved or lucky.
  3. Look for the "lucky form" flag. Lots of points plus a negative xG difference means regression risk; these teams fall below the overall average next time out.
  4. Separate home and away. Within the same form band, home teams win roughly 13–15 percentage points more often than away teams.
  5. Account for the league. Form is far more meaningful in the Bundesliga, Süper Lig and Premier League than in Brazil or the Championship.
  6. Read the opponent's form too. Form is two-sided; compare both teams' xG difference.
  7. Add squad news. If the player behind a run is injured or suspended, past form tells you less (not measured separately in this study).

Form Signals and How to Read Them

Positive signals

Signal What it means
Good points + ahead on xG Deserved form; the group most likely to keep winning
Low points but positive xG difference Creating chances; results may be lagging behind performance
High season average, poor last five The season average is the stronger signal (AUC 0.609); do not overreact to a short dip

Negative signals

Signal What it means
Good points but behind on xG "Lucky form"; next-match win rate falls to 35.5%
0–3 points in last five + playing away 20.8% win rate; far below the overall average
Key contributor missing Past form carries less information

Common Mistakes in Form Analysis

1. Looking only at results

10+ points from the last five looks impressive, but if those points came while losing the xG battle, the table above shows the next-match win rate falls below the overall average.

2. Putting short-term form ahead of the season

In our data the season average (AUC 0.609) clearly beats the last five (0.573). Use recent form to adjust season quality, not to replace it.

3. Not separating home and away

Within the same points band, home sides win 13–15 percentage points more often than away sides.

4. Treating every league the same

The form effect is +21 percentage points in the Bundesliga and +4 in Brazil. "In-form team" means different things in different leagues.

Form Data in ScoreLab

In the ScoreLab app you can see a team's recent results, home and away performance, and goal and xG data on one screen before kick-off. The measurements in this guide come from the same database.

Conclusion

The data says three things:

  • Form is a real but limited signal. Good form comes with a higher win rate, but it is no guarantee.
  • The season average is more reliable than short-term form; within the last five, look at xG difference rather than points.
  • "Lucky form" is the biggest trap. Points collected while losing on xG rarely carry into the next match.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do you analyze a team's form? Start with the team's season points per game, then check the xG difference over its last five matches. A results string like W-W-D-L-W can mislead on its own; the chance quality behind it is more informative.

Is last-five form enough? Not on its own. In our 30,874 observations of teams with at least 10 matches that season, season average separated wins better than last-five points (AUC 0.609 vs 0.573).

How often does an in-form team win its next match? Home teams with 13–15 points from their last five won their next match 61.9% of the time; away teams in the same form won 48.4%.

What is lucky form? A run of good results while being outplayed on xG. In our data these teams won their next match only 35.5% of the time, compared with 54.7% for in-form teams that were also ahead on xG.

In which league does form matter most? Among the 10 leagues with the most matches, the form effect is clear in the Bundesliga (+21.3 percentage points), Süper Lig (+19.6), Russia, Ligue 1 and the Premier League, and markedly weaker in the Championship (+6.9) and the Brasileirão (+3.9). With 1–4 seasons per league, the order within the top group is not certain.
